Mike Thomas Shoulder Surgeon, East Berkshire

Mr Michael Thomas qualified MB BS from Kings College Hospital, London in 1980 and subsequently obtained the FRCS(Edinburgh) in l984, FRCS(England) in 1986 and FRCS(Orth) in 1993. After completing general surgical training in 1985 he embarked on specialist orthopaedic training initially spending a year at the University of Cape Town, South Africa returning to England in 1986. He then completed Registrar and Senior Registrar rotations at Charing Cross and St Marys hospitals in London which involved Senior Registrar posts in shoulder surgery at Reading and the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital Stanmore. He was appointed Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon to Heatherwood and Wexham Park Hospitals Berkshire in 1994 with an interest in shoulder and elbow surgery.

As the first consultant to be appointed with this interest in East Berkshire he then established and developed this service both within the NHS and the private sector, working with specialist anaesthetists (performing specialised regional nerve blockade for post operative pain relief) and physiotherapists (specialising in this area to give the best post operative rehabilitation). Working in both sectors also allows him to direct the patients' treatment to the most appropriate facility within this district for their condition and to cope with any other medical co morbidities which might best be treated within Wexham Park Hospital which whilst having a private facility (The Paragon) also has the required equipment for dealing with complex trauma and trauma reconstruction as well as offering post operative high dependency medical facilities including intensive care if required.

His practice now consists 90% of shoulder and elbow surgery, both elective and trauma, and this involves both arthroscopic (keyhole surgery) and open procedures such as joint replacement. He has published articles on shoulder and elbow arthroplasty in both adult and in juvenile rheumatoid (idiopathic) arthritis, the latter being one of only two on this subject in the world. He has also published results of surface replacement arthroplasty of the shoulder and has carried out in excess of 300 such replacements since 1998 as well as being involved in the teaching of this technique to many surgeons throughout the world. His unit in Heatherwood hospital has recently been designated an international centre of excellence by the company making the Copeland surface replacement which means that Mr Thomas has been specifically chosen because of his experience in this particular field to receive and teach this procedure to other surgeons form around the world. He has in addition been invited to many countries to lecture on shoulder and elbow surgery including Argentina, Austria, Belgium, Brazil, Chile, Finland, France, Germany, Holland, India, Italy, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, USA and extensively within the UK. He is also invited regularly as a visiting surgeon to a hospital in Cairo, Egypt.
